FOR EDITORS: The following is sample language you may want to include in your contracts and/or websites if you choose not to edit AI-generated material.
At the present time, there are no legal precedents to guide general and/or specific policy in publishing with regard to copyright of AI-generated product. In addition, at this time, the US Copyright Office is working to establish policy with regard to copyright of AI-generated material. Their concise reasoning behind this is that AI-generated product is scraped from original human-created, likely copyrighted material without the originator’s consent.
Using copyrighted material without the originator’s consent is a form of plagiarism/copyright violation. As such, until legal precedents have been established with regard to copyright of AI-generated works, in order to avoid the risk of anything remotely touching on plagiarized content or any violation of existing copyright, [insert name of company or party] cannot accept for editing any manuscript that contains AI-generated material.
*We regret any inconvenience this may cause our clients, but at this time and due to the complete lack of any guidelines with regard to copyright of AI-generated material, we have chosen to err on the side of caution. Once parameters and procedures have been established with regard to copyright of AI-generated material so as to avoid any possibility of plagiarism, we will revisit this policy.
*Thank you for your understanding.
